What it is
The best starting point for epic monsters is a force with bonuses against monsters, led by the commanders the host permits. The official troop guide assigns that role to Guardsmen and says mercenaries vary between monster-focused and player-focused bonuses.
That is a selection rule, not a universal troop ratio. Your target has its own traits and strengths, while your account brings different equipment, research and available units from another member's account.
A named mercenary such as Epic Monster Hunter V is a candidate to inspect, not proof of the best choice by name alone. Read the unit's current bonuses, target restrictions and cost before treating it as the answer for every epic.
How it works
Match the troop's job to the enemy
The official guide gives each troop type 3 traits that determine vulnerabilities and special bonuses against other troop types. Inspect those traits on both sides before deciding which of your available units belongs in the army.
Specialists are designed around player combat. Their base attack against an enemy player is multiplied by 2 under the official rule; that is not an epic-monster bonus to assume in a monster fight.
Engineer corps specialise against fortifications. A large number on a siege unit is not a reason to ignore that role when the actual target is an epic squad.
Check the commander restriction first
| Host | Permitted commander setup |
|---|---|
| Armageddon | 1 Hero only |
| Doomsday | 1 captain |
| Hellforge | 1 captain |
| Arachne's Swarm | All 3 Captains |
| Shadow Invasion | Hero and Captains together |
| Fenrir's Invasion | 1 captain |
| Jörmungandr's Invasion | Attack as a raid |
The epic-battle article and Ragnarök article establish those differences. A formation copied from a different host can fail before troop strength becomes relevant.
Understand the battle floor and initiative
The epic-battle rules say 0 kills earn 0 points. Joining a session therefore does not by itself guarantee a useful scoring attack.
The initiative guide says higher initiative strikes first, with that advantage applying once per round. Equal initiative gives each side a 50% first-strike chance. Do not assume that being the player who launched the march guarantees the opening strike.
Step by step
- Open the live event and confirm the permitted commander setup.
- Inspect the target's troop traits and special bonuses.
- Select available monster-focused units whose bonuses apply to that target.
- Check which commander and equipment support those selected units.
- Plan the losses and recovery before sending the army.
- Read the battle result before repeating or increasing the commitment.
Change a formation for a reason you can explain: a different target trait, a newly unlocked unit or a commander bonus that actually applies. An unexplained change in battle outcome is not proof that a copied ratio is universally better.
No official source publishes a universal best formation or target-specific troop ratios. Current unit statistics and your own battle results are the way to compare losses.
By situation
Ordinary monster battles
Use the monster-bonus role as the starting filter. Compare the actual target traits with your available troop cards, rather than assuming that a unit trained for player combat performs the same job.
For a new account, it can be more useful to unlock and support an appropriate troop tier than to fill a march with unrelated units. The troop-acquisition guide covers the research and training path.
Player battles
Player combat uses a different target and rewards different bonuses. The official role of Specialists explains why an army used successfully against a city is not automatically an epic-monster formation.
Keep your army's purpose explicit when asking clanmates for advice. A request for help attacking a player and a request for an epic formation should include different target information.
Named epic events and clan raids
The Ragnarök guide separates the solo-captain target from the raid target. Their shared event does not make their attack formats identical.
For Rise of the Ancients, the official rules add preparation and eligibility. A member must have been in the clan for 24 hours to take part, and the clan artifacts upgraded on the first day decide the squad summoned on the second. A strong personal army cannot replace missing eligibility or an unsuitable clan preparation plan.
The companion research for the hero-only host, the captain-only host, the split epic event and the ancient raid arc reinforces that host-first approach.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a formation before checking whether its commanders are allowed.
- Applying a player-combat bonus to a monster calculation.
- Selecting siege units by their displayed attack while ignoring their intended target.
- Copying troop ratios without matching the enemy and account bonuses.
- Spending on repeated attacks before reviewing losses and recovery.
Quick reference
| Question | Practical decision |
|---|---|
| Is this a monster target? | Start with applicable monster bonuses |
| Is the target a player? | Reassess the player-focused troop roles |
| Is it a fortification? | Check the specialist siege role and initiative rule |
| Does the host restrict commanders? | Build within that restriction first |
| Is the action a raid? | Follow its assembly rules and contribution requirements |
| Did the opening battle perform poorly? | Review target traits, kills and losses before repeating |
For the separate question of arranging troop groups, use the stacking guide. Grouping troops and selecting the correct troop families are related decisions, but they answer different problems.
Check the calendar before spending troops intended for another host's window.
FAQ
Which troop family should I inspect first for epic monsters?
The official troop guide assigns monster bonuses to Guardsmen. Also inspect mercenaries whose bonuses apply to your actual monster target.
Is the strongest displayed unit always best?
No. Its relevant bonuses, enemy traits, permitted commander and recovery cost all matter. A number without its target context is not a complete comparison.
Can I use the same commanders for every epic?
No. The documented host restrictions differ. Check the comparison table and the live event before selecting troops.
Does launching the attack guarantee the first strike?
No. Initiative controls the order, and tied initiative has a random first strike under the official rule.
Is there a verified ratio that wins every epic fight?
The sources used here do not establish one. Match the actual target and use current battle results to refine a permitted army.
